" The start of a dream"

In the summer of 2007, a man with a dream gave Northern Ohio Youth for Christ just over 100 acres of woodlands in Huron County specifically for creating a Christian camp for teens.  Another man with a dream decided the camp would be better if it had a lake…and dug one! 

The dream developed mission and a focus, that are different from other teen camps.  Both are reflected in its name:  “In the Whisper”.  More on that later. At the end of summer, that’s all it was!  A dream…with woods and a lake, and fish and trees and blackberries and elderberries and deer and wild turkey and fox and poison ivy and mud.  It had frogs and toads and snakes and spiders but as far as a teen camp goes, it had a long way to go.

That was last summer.  Now the dream is growing.  It’s a year later and things are happening.  Groups of volunteers have been busy clearing trails, building bridges, constructing team-building elements, and in general figuring out just how to go about this whole building a camp thing.   There’s now a mobile home on site that can be used for small group ministry.  Volunteers are assembling a cabin made out of two 40’ semi trailers.  (The view out the windows is awe inspiring.)  Men’s groups from two nearby churches have built a 20’x20’ pavilion near the lake and will have a shingled roof on it shortly.   Others put in a beach where you can get in and out of the lake with clean feet.  By early fall the camp will be ready for at least two small groups to do overnight trips simultaneously. 

It is now the summer of 2008, "In the Whisper" is just a year old and there’s a lot still to be done.  We’ve found that in Huron County at least, vegetation grows quickly, even where it’s not wanted.  Trails need to be cleared and mulched.  Cabins need to be built.  Other structures are needed.  So far over 100 volunteers have seen the vision and decided to help.  Hundreds more are needed and welcome.

Like most dreams, this one will never be finished.  Ideas abound.  What about a tree house big enough to sleep 12? (There’s a great spot for one.)   How about a cabin built from a real airplane? (We’re working on this one.)   Or a train caboose?   How about raising live dinosaurs?  (Just kidding…I think.) Come dream with us!
